Previous births: Mahabal was a king that had six other friends that were very dear to him. Each one would not take any important decisions without consulting the other six. One day Mahabal heard a spiritual discourse and he wanted to become an ascetic and asked his friends if they wanted to join him on his spiritual quest. The other friends thought they had been thru good times and bad times together then why not in taking a more spiritual path. All 7 of them renounced worldly life and took diksha (initiation to monk-hook). As Mahabal was doing his spiritual practices he thought he should be ahead of his friends and began doing more spiritual practices in secrecy. This in turn gave him the karma that would lead to his birth as a woman in the next life.
Mallinath bhagwan was born to Kumbha and Rakshita in Mithilapuri and was a seen as divine princess. Her mother had a desire to smell boquets of flowers all the time and wanted to sleep on 5 different color fragrant flowers. A rule is that anytime a mother of a pious soul has a desire for something it is fulfilled. So the mother's infatuation with flowers led the king to name the girl Malli after she was born.
