Kumarpaal
Kumarpaal raja was a a great follower of Jainism after Acharya Hemchandra had introduced him to Jainism values and life of non-violence. Kumarpaal was a great advocate for non-violence and even had made laws protecting animals from hunters. One incident of Kumarpaal's life was showed his level of understanding for Jainism and non-violence so much that it has been written by guru's in religious texts. One day as Kumarpaal raja was doing Samayak a insect had bit him on his leg. Kumarpaal felt something and became distracted as to what was occurring under his leg and he saw the insect stuck to his leg. So he tried taking the mupaati and punjari to have the insect detach from but the insect would not detach. He then tried to use his hand to remove the insect but the insect had a tight grip on his leg. So then he knew if he applied any more force to remove the bug with his hand it would kill him. So then he called his servant and asked to bring him a knife. So then he takes the knife from the servant and cuts the skin from his leg and goes under the skin as so it won't cut the legs of the insect that is attached to him. He always thought that for a few minutes of pain I would take the chance of causing a insect harm? No I won't do that it would ruin my status as a shravak and more importantly devalue the deed of Samayak. I must do what I can to save this insects life. Just as I have a soul so does this insect and I cannot hurt another living being for my happiness. Kumarpaal raja is a exemplary man of Jainism that although he had not taken the vows of a monk and lived an ascetic life he treated all living beings with the utmost respect.
