Hirsuri Maharaj
Hirsuriji maharaj was a great Acharya who was well versed in many of the scriptures and had a deep understanding of what the message they were sending. During that time Akhbar the great was ruling over area. Hirsuri had successfully converted him to take on a more non-violent way of life. Then the moguls came and started to kidnap and rape women right off the street. Archarya Hirsuri saw the problems arising and decided to make a new rule to protect women. Hirsuri decided that any woman who wanted to take diksha and become a nun has to wait until they are at least 35 years of age. Before the rule was set by Bhagwan Mahavir that anyone over 8 can take diksha with the permission of their parents. Many may think how can Hirsuri change the rule that god had set? But it was said by one of Bhagwan Mahavir's disciples that the rules they had made applied for the times that they were in. So while it was not so much about the rules as much as about the principles behind the rule. The job of the Acharya was to protect the Jain sangh. It was his duty to protect the sanctity of nuns. So he placed the rule so it was reduce the amount of young women who would have been raped from travelling as a nun must do. It is said that you can ask any maharaj about this and they will confirm he has indeed set this rule in place.
